Although K2 is new to Outside Sports, K2 is actually the one of the oldest brands in skiing and was responsible for revolutionising the sport in the early 1960’s when it introduced the first widely available fibreglass skis to the market.
Like many other core mountain sports brands, the K2 story began in a garage. In this instance it was a garage on Vashon Island, a small community near Seattle, in Washington State, USA.
K2 is named for the two Kirschner brothers, which by happy coincidence is also the name of the world’s second highest mountain.
In 1962 Bill and Don Kirschner, who made fibreglass products for other uses, had a brainwave - they realised that fibreglass was the perfect material for making light, agile skis. At that time most skis were still heavy and inert, and prone to either warping or bending, because they were either made of wood, or more recently metal (thanks to our friend Howard Head of HEAD Skis fame).
