Chums is another of the many amazing brands we have at Outside Sports that was founded by an outdoor adventurer who saw a need for a product that didn’t exist yet. In this case, it was a Colorado river boat guide called Mike Taggett who watched countless clients losing their sunglasses to the river water. So on a day off, Mike sat an ancient Singer sewing machine inside his old VW van, with his faithful Golden Retriever Chumley looking on, and made the first pair of Chums eyewear retainers. They were an instant success. All of a sudden Mike's customers weren't losing their glasses anymore, and word of his invention quickly spread.

The brand name ‘Chums’ has a double inspiration – in part it was named for Mike’s assistant in the invention Chumley, and partly because the retainers were a little friend that kept your precious glasses safefor you – making them a good chum to have by your side in an adventure. 

Of course, you don’t need to be negotiatingthe perilous rapids of the Colorado River to lose your sunnies – that can happen at any time. Which explains why Chums became such a big hit worldwide.
