The Boot Fitting Process
Step 1: Professional Foot Scanning & Analysis
Using the Sidas FEETBOX® EVO 3D foot scanning system, our expert boot fitters take precise measurements of your feet - capturing foot length, width, volume, arch height, pressure distribution, and any sensitive areas or problem zones.
Step 2: Expert Ski Boot Selection
Based on your foot profile, skiing ability, skiing style, and required flex rating, our specialist boot fitters identify the ski boots that best match your unique foot shape, volume, and performance goals.
Step 3: Ski Sock Selection
The right ski sock is a critical part of the boot fitting process. We recommend thin, technical ski socks designed to work with your boot liner, improving warmth, comfort, and fit from the inside out.
Step 4: Custom Ski Boot Insoles
We fit and trim Sidas custom ski boot insoles precisely to your foot and boot shape, supporting your arch, correcting alignment, distributing pressure evenly, and reducing foot fatigue on the mountain.
Step 5: Boot Liner Heat Moulding
Using professional heat moulding techniques, we shape your ski boot liner precisely to the contours of your foot - eliminating pressure points, improving warmth, and locking your foot in the optimal skiing position.
Step 6: Ski Boot Shell Modification
Where required, our boot fitters punch out or stretch specific areas of the ski boot shell to relieve pressure points caused by bunions, wide feet, high insteps, or prominent bones, without compromising boot performance or power transfer.
Step 7: Alignment & Canting Assessment
We assess your lower leg alignment and skiing stance, making canting adjustments where needed to optimise your edging efficiency, reduce knee strain, and improve overall skiing performance.
Step 8: Fine-Tuning & Testing
Final micro-adjustments are made to ensure your custom ski boot fit is perfect. We walk you through exactly how your boots should feel, and we're here for follow-up adjustments whenever you need them.

I've always struggled to find ski boots that properly support my very narrow feet, suit my flex level, and don't aggravate my ingrown toenails. From start to finish my needs were listened to carefully and taken into consideration. With the right boots and custom insoles perfectly moulded to my feet, I can now truly enjoy skiing without the fear of pain or lack of support.
Highly recommend Kazu!
These guys are fantastic. Thank you to Skylar for your service and skill, you are a ski and boot magician. I will only ever buy boots from these guys, and the rest of the store has very cool kit too.
My daughter is an advanced skier who has gone through Strolz, Atomic Hawx, and Nordica Speedmachine boots over the years due to her tricky feet: narrow ankles, a very high instep, and wide feet. We decided to track down the best boot fitter in New Zealand. Coming off the mountain yesterday, the look on her face and the big prolonged hug told me everything. The Lange Shadow LV 115W was a 30 year solution in the making. Thanks to Tsakasa, we are now one big happy ski family!
Kazu is an awesome boot fitter with years of experience and is super knowledgeable about any boot issue you can imagine. He is recommended by all of the local skiers. He has worked with me and my friends to fine tune issues in our boots, including two of us with knee and ankle injuries. He gives affordable options and is honest about what you really need rather than simply trying to sell you everything
I went to Wanaka specifically to see Kazu for boot fitting and he is amazing. He is very patient and knowledgeable, spending a long time helping me try different boots without ever pushing for a sale. I felt completely comfortable the whole time. If you are looking for a boot fitter in the area, he is the best.
After a 13 year hiatus I tried skiing on my 20 year old Atomics, only to find that 50 year old feet are very different from 30 year old feet. I was recommended to visit Outside Sports where Remi, who used to work at Rossignol and happens to be a materials engineer who majored in plastics, helped mould my boots and made a custom insole. Back on the skis, it feels like I am in my 30s again.
Take your boots to Remi at Outside Sports 100% worth it
The service around buying the boot was great. Fitted patiently by the lovely American guy (Skylar), I felt well supported in my purchase of the right boot and how to use them well.
Thanks Outside Sports.
Also appreciated the loyalty points :)
I have long had issues with my ski boots. Kazu gave me a lengthy consultation, explained my issues clearly and recommended the best course of action. No upselling, just honest advice about what would work best for me. Highly recommend if you are looking to buy ski boots in Wanaka.
I went in for a ski boot adjustment and their expert team identified and fixed the problem for a reasonable price. The adjustment improved my skiing and drastically improved the comfort of my boot. Phenomenal customer service, excellent pricing and an all round positive experience.
Amazing state of the art Ski Boot fitting.
Had a problem with a snowboard boot, not bought here and just went in for some advice. Walked out with a foam pad added to my inner which saved my holiday. Awesome advice and service
I purchased my ski boots from Outdoor sports from Tsukasa a couple of years back and his service both at the point of fitting them and now where I needed a readjustment are so highly recommended. Nothing is ever a problem and the service is superb. So happy and a repeat customer for sure! Thanks Tsukasa
Frequently Asked Questions
About the Service
How long does a ski boot fitting take?
A professional ski boot fitting at Outside Sports typically takes [X] minutes to [X] hours depending on the level of customisation required. We recommend allowing plenty of time so there's no rush - getting your custom ski boot fit right is worth it.
Do I need an appointment or can I walk in?
We recommend booking a ski boot fitting appointment to guarantee time with one of our specialist boot fitters in Queenstown or Wanaka. Walk-ins are welcome but subject to availability, particularly during peak ski season.
Can you fit boots I've already bought elsewhere?
Yes. Our expert ski boot fitters can assess and customise ski boots purchased anywhere. If your current boots aren't fitting correctly, we can often resolve the issue through professional heat moulding, ski boot shell modification, custom ski boot insoles, or alignment adjustments.
Do you offer boot fitting in both Queenstown and Wanaka?
Yes. Our specialist ski boot fitting service is available at both our Queenstown and Wanaka stores. Both locations are equipped with the Sidas FEETBOX® EVO, the most advanced 3D foot scanning technology in New Zealand.
What should I wear to a ski boot fitting appointment?
We recommend wearing or bringing thin technical ski socks to your ski boot fitting appointment. Avoid thick wool socks as they compress the boot liner, restrict circulation, and can give a misleading fit. We stock a range of technical ski socks in store if you need them.
What should I bring to a ski boot fitting appointment?
We recommend bringing or wearing thin technical ski socks. If you have existing ski boots you'd like assessed or customised, bring those along too. If you are purchasing new ski boots, our specialist boot fitters will take care of everything else - just bring your feet!
Do I need to bring my own ski boots?
Not necessarily. If you are looking for new ski boots, our specialist boot fitters will select the right options based on your Sidas FEETBOX® EVO foot scan and skiing profile. If you have existing ski boots you would like assessed or customised, bring those along.
What is the Sidas FEETBOX® EVO?
The Sidas FEETBOX® EVO is the world's most advanced 3D foot scanning system and Outside Sports is the only ski boot fitting specialist in New Zealand to have it. It captures precise measurements of your foot length, width, volume, arch height, pressure distribution, and leg alignment, giving our expert boot fitters the data needed to deliver a truly custom ski boot fitting experience.
About Fit
How do I know if my ski boots fit correctly?
Common signs of a poor ski boot fit include cold or numb feet, persistent pressure points, heel lift inside the boot, and feeling disconnected from your skis. A correctly fitted ski boot should feel snug and supportive with no pain, no heel movement, and full toe wiggle room. Read our full ski boot fitting guide.
How often should I get my ski boots refitted?
We recommend a professional ski boot fitting assessment every [X] seasons, or any time your feet change due to injury, surgery, weight change, or pregnancy. Ski boot liners compress and pack out over time, meaning boots that once fitted well may need reassessment after several seasons of use.
Is ski boot fitting worth it for beginners?
Absolutely. Beginner skiers benefit enormously from a professional ski boot fit. Learning to ski in uncomfortable, poorly fitted boots makes everything harder including balance, confidence, and technique. Starting with a custom ski boot fit from day one means faster progression and a far more enjoyable experience on the mountain.
How tight should ski boots be?
Ski boots should feel snug and firm but never painful. Your toes should wiggle but not curl, your heel should be locked firmly in the heel pocket with no lift, and your midfoot should feel securely held with no space above the instep. Read our full guide on how tight your ski boots should be.
What is ski boot flex?
Ski boot flex refers to how much resistance the boot offers when you push your shin forward against the cuff. Flex ratings typically range from 50 for soft, forgiving entry level ski boots to 130+ for stiff, performance focused expert and race boots. Choosing the right ski boot flex for your ability, weight, and skiing style is critical for comfort, control, and performance on the mountain. Read our full guide on ski boot flex.
