You're probably very familiar with the SPF number you see on sunscreen creams and lotions. The number is a measure of the amount of protection it offers until it's time to reapply it.

UPF is a number that's assigned to a fabric and relates to its ability to protect the skin from ultraviolet light. In the past that has mostly come down to its thickness, meaning high UPF protection means wearing a heavier fabric than is idea in warm temperatures.

It's also worth knowing that a fabric's UPF can change. If the fabric is stretched or gets wet it will give you less protection. 

Fabrics can be given a UPF treatment to improve the level of protection they provide - but Patagonia has found a better way without the need for chemicals.
