Gravel Bikes vs Road Bikes - Which is Best For You?

Gravel bikes have been around for a while now and there's a handy introduction to them in Outside Sports bike blog last year – but if you’re still on the fence about whether a gravel bike vs a road is right for you this article might help you make the decision. So let's start with what's most important - whether you should get a gravel bike to complement or even replace your road bike depends on these three main criteria. 1. The surfaces you expect to ride on. 2. How to Prepare Your Bike for the Mondraker Motatapu MTB Event 2025

How to Prepare Your Bike for the Mondraker Motatapu MTB Event 2025

The Mondraker Motatapu MTB is a classic fixture on the annual adventure event calendar, giving participants a unique, once a year opportunity to ride, run, or hike from Wanaka to Arrowtown through unforgettable high country scenery.

The 47km route starts at Bike Glendhu at Wanaka then wends its way through Glendhu Station, to Soho Station and Motatapu Station, before finishing in Arrowtown. The Motatapu trail is challenging, but still achievable for most riders, and the vistas along the way are mind blowing – which is why the event attracts so many repeat participants.

What are Mips bike helmets and how do they work? Outside Sports

What are Mips bike helmets and how do they work?

Mips stands for Multi-Impact Protection System. It’s an extra low-friction layer that fits inside the helmet between the hard shell and the lining, which can move 10 – 15mm in any direction when there’s an impact. That ‘give’ helps absorb and reduce the amount of force transmitted to your brain from rotational motion. Usually the Mips layer is bright yellow and you can see parts of it when you look inside a Mips equipped helmet. Mips systems weigh a barely noticeable 25-45 grams, not much more than the weight of a typical energy bar.
