Walking into a professional ski boot fitting for the first time can feel a little unknown. What will they do to my feet? How long will it take? What should I bring? At Outside Sports, we want you to arrive feeling prepared and confident, so here's a straightforward overview of what to expect when you come in for a boot fitting with us.

What to Bring to Your Ski Boot Fitting

Coming prepared makes a real difference to the quality of your fitting. Here's what to bring:

Your ski socks — Thin, technical ski socks are essential. Avoid thick wool socks or everyday socks, as these affect the fit and give us an inaccurate result. If you're unsure whether your current ski socks are suitable, bring them along and we'll assess them as part of the process.

Your current ski boots — If you already own a pair, bring them in. Seeing what you've been skiing in helps our boot fitters understand the fit you're used to, identify any issues with your current set-up, and make better decisions about what to look for in your next boot.

Your boot history — Think about any previous problems you've had with ski boots or your feet in general before you come in. Pressure points, heel lift, cold feet, shin bang, or ongoing foot pain are all useful things to mention. The more we know upfront, the better we can help you.

Your budget — Have a budget in mind, but be prepared to be a little flexible if it means getting the most suitable boot for your foot. It's also worth factoring custom footbeds into your budget from the start if you don't already own a pair. As you'll read below, they are a key part of a successful boot fitting and make a significant difference to both comfort and performance on the mountain.

How Long Will a Ski Boot Fitting Take?

Set aside one and a half to two hours, and don't rush yourself. A thorough professional ski boot fitting is not a quick process, and we will never hurry it along. We have the time, patience, and expertise to make sure you leave with the right boot. If it takes a little longer than expected, that's fine. Getting it right is what matters.

What We Cover in Your Fitting

Our boot fitting process has eight steps, and each one matters. Here's a high-level look at what we work through together:

3D Foot Scanning — We start with a professional foot scan using the Sidas FEETBOX EVO system, capturing precise measurements of length, width, volume, arch height, and pressure distribution across both feet.

Boot Selection — Using your foot profile alongside your skiing ability, skiing style, and performance goals, we identify the boots that are the right match for you. The right ski boot is never about how it looks or what's trending. It's about fit and function. Some skiers need a stiffer flex than their ability might suggest, others need softer. We focus on how the boot works with your foot and your body, not the numbers on the outside.

Ski Sock Selection — We help you find the right technical ski sock, because the right sock is a more important part of the fit than most people realise. A thin, warm ski-specific sock improves precision, control, and comfort inside the boot. Thick socks restrict blood flow and ultimately make your feet colder, not warmer.

Custom Insoles — We fit and heat mould your Sidas custom insoles to take a precise carbon copy of your foot, then finish them with a heel stabiliser suited to your foot type. We cannot emphasise enough how important a well-made custom footbed is to a successful ski boot fitting. In most cases it is the single biggest factor in getting the fit right, and the difference in comfort and performance on the mountain is immediately noticeable.

Liner Heat Moulding — Your boot liner is professionally heat moulded to conform to the exact contours of your foot, eliminating pressure points and locking in your optimal skiing position.

Shell Modification — Where needed, we punch or stretch the boot shell to relieve pressure points caused by bunions, wide feet, high insteps, or prominent bones. Ski boots are designed to be modified, and small changes can make a very big difference to long-term comfort.

Alignment and Canting — We assess your lower leg alignment and skiing stance, making canting adjustments where needed to optimise your edging efficiency, reduce knee strain, and improve your overall skiing performance.

Fine-Tuning and Testing — Final adjustments are made until everything feels right, and we walk you through exactly how your boots should feel before you leave.

If you'd like to understand each of these steps in detail, including the technology we use and why each stage matters, you can read our full boot fitting process breakdown on our ski boot fitting page.

What Happens After Your Ski Boot Fitting

Before you leave we'll walk you through how your boots should feel, how to buckle them correctly, and what to expect during the first few days on snow as the liner settles and packs down.

Once you have your boots, wear them as much as possible before your first ski trip. Whether that's at an indoor snow centre, a dry slope, or simply around the house, the more time you spend in them the more the liner will soften and mould to your foot, giving you a better fit from day one on the mountain.

Some initial sensations like minor tingling, slight numbness, or the occasional hot spot are normal as the liner beds in. If these don't ease with use, come back and see us. In most cases it only takes a small adjustment to fix a problem, and our after-sale boot fitting service is there to make sure your boots keep working for you all season long. We also offer follow-up fitting appointments after your first ski day if anything needs fine-tuning.
